TMJ Symptoms - The Importance Of An Early Diagnosis

by Kevin Bates

Temporomandibular joint disease is a condition wherein the joint that is responsible for connecting the skull to the jaw becomes inflamed. Sufferers of the disease find it difficult to move the jaw as well as open and close the mouth. Moving the jaw is often accompanied by pain. It also causes headaches, nausea and sometimes, infection of the mouth.

Treating this condition comes in many ways. Morning jaw exercises and using a nighttime biofeedback headband may be enough for cases that aren't too severe. If the condition becomes too severe though, it will need long term treatment and sometimes, patients need to go under the knife in order for the malfunction to be corrected. As this is the case, it is imperative for you to know TMJ symptoms in order for you to avoid costly treatment.

TMJ symptoms vary and some may be experienced by the patient while some are not. The indications vary from patient to patient since the condition can be caused by many things. A problem in one's teeth can be the cause of the condition. One dental problem that may cause the syndrome is unaligned teeth as it makes the jaw contract in an abnormal way, putting more pressure to the jaw and the joint. Lacking an overbite may also cause the syndrome.

Another cause of this disease is the overuse of the jaw. If one chews gum excessively, he or she may experience temporomandibular joint disease. Bruxism, the clenching of one's teeth unconsciously during his or her sleep, also stresses the jaw. An injury to the jaw may 'traumatize' the joint, causing to swell.

TMJ symptoms include: difficulty in biting or chewing, clicking or popping noises when opening or closing the mouth, earaches and headaches in the morning, hearing loss, migraines, pain in the jaw and reduced ability to open or close the mouth. If you are suffering from this, you may also suffer Tinnitus. This is the perception of sound within one's ear without a necessary outside source.

If you are experiencing any of this, it's best to see a doctor soon. A dentist can also treat the condition especially if the cause comes from a dental problem. As mentioned, being able to have this condition diagnosed early is very important as it can spell the difference between a short-term treatment and a long-term one.

Temporomandibular joint syndrome is a condition wherein the joint that connects the skull to the jaw becomes swollen. Treating it can be easy as doing morning exercises or complicated as having to go under operation. In order to avoid costly treatment, you have to recognize TMJ symptoms and catch it early on.
