Treating Brontophobia, The Fear Of Lightning and Thunder With Hypnotherapy

by Alan Densky

Brontophobia is a common fear that thousands of folks everywhere have; the fear of thunderstorms. For as long as this condition has existed, people have been searching for ways to fight it. Now there is a variety of treatment selections used. To help eliminate this phobia, professionals recommend certain hypnotherapy techniques that are proven to work in relieving fears and phobias.

Those with brontophobia have an irrational fear of thunder and lightning. Loud, startling thunder and cracks of lightning can trigger nervousness and anxiety attacks in brontophobia sufferers. Other signs include a rapid heartbeat, perspiring, and a strong feeling of fear, to the point where a person becomes sick.

The fear of thunderstorms begins at a young age for many, when as kids, we hide under the sheets during a bad storm. The phobia can be especially hard on children. Many terrified children feel powerless during a thunderstorm, and their parents often feel unable to take away their fears.

Even in spite of its common occurrence in young children, the fear of storms can develop at any time, often after someone has an experience such as getting shocked, which reminds them of a flash of lightning. A traumatic experience such as surviving a natural disaster can also trigger a fear of storms.

Some people may come to link loud noises, the sensation of pain, or terror with thunder and lightning, which can result in a full-blown phobia. Brontophobia is so common that it's even seen in many animals; for example, many pet owners observe that their pet cats seem scared in inclement weather.

Brontophobia sufferers try to avoid the sights and sounds of storms. People may experience nervous breakdowns during natural disasters such as tornadoes. This can put them in harm's way if they cannot function under circumstances which calls for them to stay calm and react decisively.

Brontophobia sufferers typically despise storm season, often suffering during times of the year when thunderstorms occur frequently. They might obsessively check weather reports and act extra cautious during bouts of bad weather. To others, these behaviors may seem extreme and highly paranoid. Phobia suffers may find this fear slowly taking control of their lives.

A wide range of options are available for relieving brontophobia and other strong fears. Popular ones include talk therapy, anti-anxiety medication, and hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy tends to provide safer, quicker results and it is non-invasive, having no harmful side effects. For these reasons, hypnotherapy is a a common therapy.

Hypnosis therapy is highly effective as a form of relaxation therapy and has long been used for this purpose. By starting with relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy helps tense, nervous phobia patients initiate the process of overcoming their fears. When a person is feeling relaxed, it is easier for hypnotherapy techniques to guide the unconscious mind into a fear-free thought process.

The vast majority of phobias are connected to negative stimuli, which become linked to fear deep within the unconscious mind. For brontophobia sufferers, the sound of thunder, the blinding flash of lightning, or even the sight of clouds often triggers alarm. Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) work at the unconscious level of the mind to dissociate the sense of fear from these triggers to bring significant phobia relief. One of the most effective techniques is called the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a type of hypnotherapy that is frequently used to treat fears. Named after its developer, Dr. Milton Erickson, MD, this type of hypnosis uses indirect suggestions hidden in metaphors, conversation, and stories to cure a phobia. Indirect suggestions are more effective than traditional post-hypnotic direct suggestions because people tend to question, resist, and reject simply being told what to do. Those which indirectly communicate to conscious thought are much better able to help people to overcome their phobias.

NLP techniques and Ericksonian hypnotherapy have an additional advantage over conventional hypnotherapy programs because they are generalized to work for any phobia. Thus, one program is effective for curing any phobia, or even more than one phobia if required. Plus, each program utilizes many different techniques to work for everyone.

Hypnotherapy is the best treatment option for many, which delivers rapid and permanent results. Shivering under the sheets and being panicked is not how a brontophobia sufferer should live. With hypnotherapy and NLP techniques, virtually everyone can overcome this serious fear.
